Introduction to Video Surveillance Recording

Recorders, now that's an odd title for a web-page. True, it is even odder language coming from GuardDog Surveillance Systems, a highly techical firm specializing in all aspects of current technology Video Systems. All of the above it true, however, if all we do is write in "industustry specific acronym soup" and security world "buzz words" how will ever communicate effectively?

This is precicely why we chose to use the term "recorders." Regardless if the hardware is a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or a NAS (Network Attached Storage) Box - terms most may not be familiar with - we all understand that when contemplating Video Security it is necessary to record information somehow.

There are many devices on which to record video images. Today, we can record video on a...

... Hand held phone
... Inside some cameras
... Directly on a PC
... Across the Internet on a PC
... DVR (Digital Video Recorder)
... VCR (Video Cassette
    Recorder)
... NVR (Network Video Recorder)
... NAS Box (Network Attached
    Storage Hard Drive)

...and the list goes on. Did you notice all the "industry specific language?" While all of the above are "true," i.e. yes they all do record video, when it comes to Surveillance Video the primary question is, "How do you plan to use your recorded video?" Understanding the answer will determine what kind of device best suits your needs.

Additional questions that help to ferret out your needs include...

... What is your purpose for recording video?
Your choice will be different if your purpose is to verify what time your
daughter got home or if you want to make sure the clients at your gaming
            tables are not "counting cards."

... What will you do with the recorded video?
If you need your video copied to a CD and provided to law enforcement as
evidence to convict your choice may be different you only wish to monitor
            your recorded history.

... How often will you need to access the recorded history?
If you search recorded history twice a month just to see what happened
your needs are very different from the need to daily access recorded history
and be able to quickly move to a specific date/time.

Beyond these insights our pages include a short history of surveillance recording technology as well as details on the three ways most security video is recorded today:

DVR's (Stand Alone and PC Based),

            NVR's (Network Video Recorders), and,

NAS Boxes (Network Attached Storage Devices)
