Cameras - IP
IP (Internet Protocol) cameras are different from analog cameras in that the video data that comes from them is "digitized" (translated from an analog voltage signal to a digital file) at the camera level and IP cameras have a unique IP address (network static and/or MAC Address) that allows their data to be accessed directly without having to connect to other network hardware.
Typical IP Camera (an inside look)
Our "simplified" graphic (right) diagrams the “inner workings” of a typical IP camera and includes only the "key" components.
A brief review of the diagram reveals IP cameras are really analog cameras with the addition of a video processor and some ancillary interface parts. In fact, one can add a video encoder to an analog camera and "create" the benefits of an IP camera.
NOTEAn ongoing "debate" rages in the industry - primarily fueled by those who stand to benefit from the sale of Analog or IP product – concerning analog vs. IP technology.
Providers of analog equipment (cameras and DVRs) argue IP Technology is over-rated, is fraught with problems and is too expensive to demand even a second look.
Conversely, IP Technology manufacturers (IP cameras and NVRs) claim analog technology is too limited for today's application, has long since reached technological apex and is antiquated beyond having any value.
CONSUMER BEWARE
Much of the "IP information" (literature publication or technical articles) available in trade journals or on the Internet is written by or for people or companies that have a vested interest in promoting their IP products. As such, there is a strong bias (slant) in virtually everything you'll find on the subject.

At GuardDog Surveillance Systems, the above graphic rather concisely details our position in "the debate." We provide IP, Analog and Hybrid (a combination of both) systems. Since we have no vested interest in the sale (of analog vs. IP equipment) and our primary purpose is that of providing video security solutions that best serve the customer's application requirements at a price range that makes sense, we're able to pick the best from both worlds and provide unique solutions that work.
In the ensuing pages, we detail the benefits, are candid about the downsides and ultimately provide a middle of the road, application experience oriented perspective on what we feel is best overall value solution - and we explain why. This section concludes with a dramatic presentation of Mega-Pixel IP cameras.
